As mothers, students, bosses, and so forth, we are always striving to hit deadlines and be on schedule. But while the list of things to do keeps growing, the number of hours we have to complete these tasks remains the same. In hopes of better navigating the busy schedules, we have carved out the five commandments of time management.

Make a List

Make a List

And don't just overwhelm a Post-It note that makes you want to cry. Even though it’d be great if everything got done today, prioritize what you actually need to do and leave the less pressing things for tomorrow. Also, don’t forget to reap the satisfaction of crossing something off!

Make Your Morning Routine Your Bedtime Routine

Even though we can't make the days longer, we kind of can. Get out the door faster by planning your outfit the night before. Check the weather, maybe go on Pinterest for some inspiration, and lay your clothes out. This will save you at least 15 minutes in the morning, plus you won't have to think as hard before your first cup of coffee.

Don't Overbook Yourself

More often than not, managing your time is difficult because you’ve spread yourself too thin. And once you do that, you're stuck because you feel compelled to follow through on your commitments. Do yourself a favor and don’t be afraid to allow a day or two more than you think you need. If something comes up that you weren’t expecting (aka life), you’ll be able to manage it better with the extra buffer time.

04
Stop Trying to Multitask

Stop Trying to Multitask

Most people believe that they can multitask, but scientists have not found that to be the case. Rather than doing many things at once, we are actually switching our attention from one thing to the other extremely fast. Give your brain a break and revert back to the one-at-a-time strategy; researchers are confident you’ll be better off.

Know When to Stop Scrolling

Between Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter, your phone is bombarded with notifications. Do not fall into the trap! Obviously, you're going to look because no one has that kind of self-control anymore, but don’t turn a two-minute gander into a 20-minute stalking session. This will keep you on schedule (and sane). If you're still struggling, look for apps that will reward you for staying off your phone!
