The rise of the boss lady is upon us, and it's about time.

Perhaps it's because women feel more empowered than ever to strike out on their own, and we're all getting sick and tired of working for "the man" — or any man. Or maybe Beyoncé has finally convinced us that we're irrepressibly powerful. Whatever the reason, more and more single women are becoming entrepreneurs [1] — especially after receiving an influx of extra money.

According to recent studies conducted by the University of Stirling in Scotland [2] and Georgia State University [3], a rising trend among single women is to put extra money toward pursuing their dreams of being business-owners. According to the UK study, "researchers found evidence that there are substantial differences in liquidity between the genders in the UK. This is based on the finding that the willingness to start a new business increases with personal wealth, and this relationship is stronger amongst women than men. The relationship is strongest amongst single women."

Overall, women are more risk-averse than men when it comes to using savings for new business ventures; however, the script is flipped when women receive an unexpected sum, such as an inheritance. With that kind of money, more women than men are embarking on new business ventures. If this trend continues, we can truly answer the question of who run the (business) world: all the single ladies.
