Ask a Savvy Bride: We Can't Agree on How to Spend Wedding Money

This Ask a Savvy Bride is part of a Wedding Season series of advice from a savvy soon-to-be bride. If you have a conundrum that you need help with, share it in the Ask Savvy group.

Dear Savvy,

My wedding is just a few months away and my fiance and I are in the midst of working though all the last minute details. One thing that's come up is what to do with any money we receive as wedding gifts. We aren't seeing eye to eye as I think it should go toward paying off our credit cards while he thinks it should be put away in a savings account and not touched. How do we come to a middle ground?

Savvy bride says:

I can't give you the answer as to how you should spend the money, but since it will be gifted to you as husband and wife, it should be spent on something that will benefit you both. If your husband is against paying off your debt with it, why not suggest using the money toward your honeymoon, or starting a joint bank account for household bills. Or, if you plan on having children, you could start an education fund to use years down the road. You should also consider your interest rates on your credit cards and savings account and figure out what makes the most sense and where you'll come out on top.

As you can see there is no right answer here, but it's imperative that you come up with a plan before the checks start coming in — money can cause a lot of tension between couples, and you want to be able to enjoy your big day (and the presents). Weigh your options together and hopefully you'll agree on something soon! Good luck.
