We've all done things that we're not proud of, but I'm wondering if any of you have ever stolen anything. I was pretty surprised to read this confession by LearnVest's Editor-in-Chief, Maria Lin, who actually admitted to stealing books when she was young. Even the woman who heads the successful personal finance website for women (that has raised almost $25 million from investors), isn't a perfect angel.
As for me, I've actually taken an unpaid item out of a store when I was in middle school. I was talking to a friend at a music store and held a CD in my hand. Engrossed in the conversation, I left the store without realizing that I still held the item. I was too scared to return it because I thought the security guards would doubt my story and arrest me. I know, I know, it sounds pretty irrational, but to my teenage mind, it seemed to be a very possible scenario. I felt a tremendous amount of guilt, but was too afraid to turn back. I then dropped the disc on a random bench (because I thought they would somehow track me) and ran off with my pal. Obviously I would do things differently now, but I'm wondering if any of you have done something similar or have taken items for other reasons. Have you ever stolen anything?
