You Won't Believe the Joke FAFSA Made About Being Poor

Jun 25 2014 - 12:06pm

Oh, FAFSA. Perhaps the government body in charge of helping everyday Americans realize their college dreams shouldn't make jokes about being poor. On Tuesday, the Federal Student Aid — better known as FAFSA, the acronym for its free application — tweeted a meme photo of Kristen Wiig. It's from the infamous airplane scene in Bridesmaids and is captioned "Help me. I'm poor." The failed attempt at hipness read, "If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA." Unfortunately, many on Twitter didn't appreciate the pop culture reference, pointing out that not everyone who gets student loan help is "poor," and if they are, it's nothing to joke about. Since the gaffe, @FAFSA has taken down the tweet and apologized for the "insensitivity of our previous tweet." I have a feeling the organization will leave the humor to college students from now on.

We apologize for the insensitivity of our previous tweet. Our goal is to make college a reality for all. We're very sorry.
