What Alicia Florrick Can Teach You About Being a (Business) Woman

Jul 11 2014 - 1:22pm

While I may not have my own law firm, two children, or the whole of Chitown in the palm of my hand, there's a thing or two I've learned from Alicia Florrick. The Good Wife's titular character — played by the Emmy-nominated Julianna Margulies [1] — has me remarathoning the entire series this Summer, and suffice it to say, I'm drowning in life inspiration.

Perhaps the better question is what can't you learn from Alicia, who has gone from scorned politician's wife to successful trial attorney over the course of five seasons, all while navigating the day-to-day complications of romance, friendship, motherhood, and fabulous hair. Basically, she's the ultimate feminist icon, but she knows how to have a good time (and is somehow still known as "Saint Alicia"). Here are all the ways Alicia Florrick has taught me to be a confident, sexy, and pretty darn happy woman in the workplace — even when it's been really, really hard.

First, she knows how to look good on the job.

(Don't be coy.)

She networks with a college friend to get her job (what a pro!).

And genuinely appreciates the offer.

But, as we all do, she gets overwhelmed sometimes.

. . . And maybe wants to stay in bed for a few days.

But she gets it together and works through it.

She even finds a mentor to show her the way.

Did I mention she also kicks major butt at her job?

At home, she knows when to leave her kids alone . . .

. . . And when to hold them close.

When someone threatens her family? She gets cutthroat.

With her signature sense of sass intact, of course.

That's right. Talk to the hand.

And speaking of sass, can we talk about that . . .

Amazing . . .

Eyeroll?

Plus, she knows when to enjoy a glass of wine.

And really let loose.

But even she has bad days . . .

But she lets her emotions out in private, rather than in the office.

Instead, she opens up to her friends.

But at work? She keep things all business, all the time.

Let's toast to Alicia.

She certainly puts a smile on my face.
